About HowMuchToLive

HowMuchToLive helps people work out what life costs in another city before they move: rent, groceries, transport, and what a salary is really worth there. It is an independent project. Prices come from people who live in each city, and the calculators use published tax rules.

Editorial standards

  • Sources first. Tax rates come from tax authorities, legislation and official guidance. Where those aren't available in a usable form, we use a major accounting firm or payroll provider and name it.
  • Dated and labelled. Every calculator shows its tax year, the date we last checked it and links to each source. Numbers based on few reports are marked "Estimated".
  • Tested. Each tax calculator is checked against worked examples from its rules before it goes live, and re-checked when a new tax year starts.
  • Honest about limits. Each calculator lists what it leaves out. Nothing here is personal tax, legal or financial advice.
  • Independent. Nobody pays to change a number or a ranking. If the site shows ads, they are labelled and never affect any figure.

Corrections

If something is wrong, use the form below or the "Spotted a mistake?" form on any page. We check every report, fix confirmed mistakes as soon as we can and update the "Rates checked" date on the calculator concerned.

How the data works

Anyone can add prices without an account. Each price is checked for typos, wrong currencies and outliers before it counts, and one person can't move a city's numbers on their own. Read the full methodology.
