Questions

How is the equivalent salary worked out?

We turn your salary into take-home pay using your city's tax rules, scale it by how much more or less the same monthly basket costs in the other city (rent, food, transport, bills, going out), and then, where we cover the tax rules there, work back to the salary before tax.

Why isn't it just the exchange rate?

Exchange rates tell you what your money is worth in another currency, not what it buys. Rent and everyday prices differ much more between cities than currencies suggest, so the same amount can go much further in one city than another.

Does it work if I save a lot of my salary?

It assumes you spend your income the way the basket does. If you save a large share, or spend on things priced the same everywhere such as flights or electronics, you need less than the converter shows to keep the same savings.
